crawling and chasing a purple ball

Lately “date night” has become “talk about various things while entertaining David” night. For our children this evening phase of entertainment comes after “hold and feed sleeping child” and before “child sleeps on his own.” It typically lasts from around 6 to 11 months old.

Evening entertainment requires ingenuity, patience, perseverance, and a sense of humor. It motivates us to prep the kids’ bedroom to accomodate a new sleeper. Ben and I also appreciate and value our alone time together all the more when we’re kid-free in the evenings again.

At the same time, having done this three times before, we realise one-on-one (and especially two-on-one!) time with our youngest, doing what he enjoys best, is both precious and fleeting.

This short video shows the fun David has throwing and crawling after an Aussie rules football while Ben and I sit back and watch. You may notice that David crawls with one leg up like Nikki did at this age. He also has his own unique excited noise.

  1. He throws that football really well! Mike and I have enjoyed our quiet evenings alone together, but we’re looking forward to sharing them with a baby again, as well. :)

  2. MuM/Grandma says:

David is so expressive! Each child brings their own special joy into our lives. I had to laugh at his deliberate toss of the ball.

  3. Megan says:

What an arm! It’s really great to watch him in action like that. Thanks for sharing. :)

  4. Jen says:

Love his crawl and excited noises! I bet he loves that time he has with you and Ben.

  5. Heather says:

What a cutie. We just watched Jim Gaffigan’s newest special last night. His first 10 minutes are the best because it’s all about getting kids to bed and trying to get alone time at night. I laughed until I cried because we could so relate and yet, you’re right, it’s precious and fleeting.
