sunhat

Human behaviour, much more than ozone depletion,
determines the overall effect of UV on people in Australia.

The sun is strong here under the hole in the ozone layer. To play in the garden, sunhats are a necessity.

Michael is able to put this one on himself, a huge help to his busy mama. Thanks to Grandpa and Grandma for the great accessory.

How do you get your kids to keep their hats on? That’s my struggle…

Michael looks darling in your photo!

Good question, MaryAnne – I think a lot of factors go into it.

One is that the sun is so incredibly bright and strong that I think my kids are more comfortable with their hats on and the sun out of their eyes.

Another is that Nikki loves her hat – and I sewed that little drawstring/cord pull on to keep it from flying away in the wind.

Michael does pull his hat off sometimes, and then we have him put it right back on with the consequence if he doesn’t put his hat on he won’t get to play outside. That’s enough for him at the moment at least. He also really likes hats – he has three and always requests one when he’s put in his car seat (probably because he’s destroyed the sun shade!).

Other kids here also wear their hats, so I think that’s a factor as well.

I think this is an area where my children would benefit from more modeling from me. I need to sew in a drawstring on my hat so it doesn’t blow away and I’ll wear it more.

Hope something in there is helpful for you! Maybe someone else will chime in with other ideas as well.
