Australian redback spider

Posted by: blissfule In: Perth ()

How appropriate that today, Australia Day, we had our first sighting of one of the more infamous natives of this great country: a redback spider.

It was a great teaching moment for our children. Ben supervised a close-up look and told them what to do if they see one (leave it alone, tell Mama or Baba where you saw it), and to get help fast in case they are ever bitten.

Eugh! Definitely one of the benefits of living in Scotland, no deadly creepy crawlies!! When we visited Perth, I remember Bruce asking, “have you brushed your teeth?” because there was a redback on the bathroom mirror. Great way to educate the children – how are you with spiders, Elisa?

I am not terribly fond of spiders, Aileen, and my dislike intensifies the larger and thicker they are. Fortunately the female redback’s body is only a centimeter long and the anti-venom can be effectively administered anytime within a few days of a bite, so this common spider doesn’t make me panic. On the other hand, sighting the Sydney Funnel-web spider on which Peter Jackson’s Shelob was based would see me grabbing the kids and fleeing to the nearest playground!! So glad those are safely on the other side of the continent from me!

EEEeek! This could only be worse if you had found a snake in the garden. I confess though that my dislike of spiders and snakes is entirely the fault of literature. Spiders are crafty, sneaky, killers and snakes, with their slithering are just the emodiment of pure evil.

If you want a logical, rational reaction go to National Geographic!

Yikes! Glad you were able to show it to your kids and let them know what to do if they see one. Hopefully that’s the last time they ever see one so close!!!

That spider looks quite scary – not sure I would have the presence of mind to turn it into a teaching moment, well done!
