homemade bleach wipes

Posted by: blissfule In: Perth ()

In the spirit of doing less this year, I plan to periodically share some of the shortcuts that allow me to parent more efficiently and work smarter.
~ ~ ~

I love having only one bathroom, because that means I only have to clean one bathroom.

The downside is that we're all sharing one bathroom.

Somehow I don't find it restful to soak in a bathtub decorated with cat litter crumbs.

And as wonderful as it is to have a toilet trained preschooler, I could do without the little drips on the toilet seat. And did I mention that we plan to toilet train our son soon?

sanitizing frequently used surfaces

I like the vinegar cleaner I use in the kitchen. However, our bathroom demands full-on germ warfare.

Bleach would do the trick, but in order to use it frequently I want a safe, convenient way to store and dispense it in the bathroom. Clorox® wipes aren't readily available here, and I imagine they would be expensive if they were.

So, I made my own using this recipe:

homemade bleach wipes

You will need: Method:
  • Cut reusable red towels into baby wipe size (approx 18cm x 20cm)
  • Fold the towels in half and place them in an empty baby wipe container
  • Pour bleach solution over the wipes
  • Pull out one wipe and use it to clean frequently used bathroom surfaces
  • Throw the used wipe in a little flip-top plastic bin
  • When you start to run low, wash the used wipes and repeat
I am well rewarded for the half hour it took to make these wipes when I sink gratefully into a marvelously crumb-free bath. Ahhhh.

Great thinking! I have to say, clorox wipes are one thing I splurge on in our house for the bathroom (since they are so easy to buy here)

I love this idea! What type of fabric are the wipes?

Hi Nicki – the wipes are a nonwoven cloth similar to this (CHUX wipes). I bought ours at a big home improvement warehouse.

This cloth will wear out quickly if washed on a regular cycle. Now that these have revolutionized my life, I think after this batch disintegrates I will try a sturdier cloth – maybe my husband’s old white undershirts?

What a great idea! I’m totally inspired. Clorox wipes are a guilty pleasure for me. I know I should use cloth as its more environmentally friendly but I haven’t been able to give up the convenience.

Do you use cloth wipes for Michael and Vi?

Hi Laura – we are cloth wiping fools around here. :) I keep a cloth wipe which can be hygienically rinsed (I do not know the science behind that one!) for wiping Nikki and Michael’s faces and hands after each meal. For diapered bottoms, I love cotton cloth wipes dipped in water, sometimes spiked with a drop of tea tree oil – of course the nappy wipes are washed rather than rinsed.

Thanks for sharing! I’m surely tucking this one away for future use! I love that they are washable. Although, since we don’t use baby wipes anymore, I’ll have to figure that one out. Might have to go buy a tub to have one to use!

Can you tell me more about your cloth baby wipe solution? We use disposable wipes, and go through them so quickly. I would love a more economic and environmentally friendly way to meet the same end. And I love your homemade cleaning wipes – very clever, Elisa.
