this year I resolve to…

Posted by: blissfule In: Perth ()

A line from Graham's sermon this weekend grabbed me. He said "We love doers - people who get things done."

It is so tempting to measure my self-worth by what I get done. Anything, really, in addition to the endlessly repetitive tasks of motherhood. Setting goals and working relentlessly toward them until they are achieved.

What I want is to push aside the mundane, the millionth request from my children, the need to be patient while they attempt something I could do much more quickly. I long to get something done.

I even pray about it - whining to God internally when my last ounce of patience is exhausted, "Oh please, Lord, please let me get something done!"

And then in his sermon Graham reminds me of Mary and Martha and the topsy turvy kingdom of God. Where the last will be first, and the first last. Where the woman who sits at Jesus' feet listening is praised, and the busy woman is pitied.

Once again I am reminded that this quiet servitude, taking care of my small children at home, this is what God has called me to. And if I focus less on what I could be doing and listen more to what God has to say, I am following Him.

The new year is here, and I resolve to... do less. And listen more.

Good thoughts, Elisa. I’m a doer as well–the Lord is continually helping me to be rather than do–our only “doing” to spring from our “being.” One of my favorite scriptures along those lines is Isaiah 26:12–

LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us.

We can do or be nothing without him!

Yes, I want to sit more and enjoy because I find I can’t sit still and end up doing way more than I should!

This post is such a blessing to me, E, and I look forward to reading the sermon entirely. I’ll lift you in prayer regarding your desire to do less and listen more, likely at the same time I’m praying for these same things in myself. Much love to you.

I needed to be reminded of this at this point in time. Sometimes I just want to push the mundane on someone else for a while and go out and earn some money, or accomplish something outside the house, but that is not my calling right now. Thanks for the reminder to listen.
