I'm so impressed that you guys are far more interested in the health of my children than in winning a free CD. Don't forget that you're very welcome to enter the giveaway if you want.
Vi helped us learn a few things about croup this past weekend that I thought might be useful to share here.
Vi's first ever visit to a hospital; Ben took this picture while we were waiting to be seen by the doctor
the admitting nurse gave Nikki and Michael some colouring sheets; it was also Michael's first ever experience of a hospital
Croup is akin to laryngitis, and the reason it's dangerous is because it narrows the narrowest part of the throat, making it difficult to draw breath.
Croup is contagious and is currently going around Perth.
While suffering, Vi was much more comfortable upright on Ben's or my back in a carrier than in any other position.
Because one of the steroids is more difficult to store than others, doctors at the hospital give a different steroid than doctors in general practice.
Perth's children's hospital, Princess Margaret, has studied croup extensively over the years, and they give the lowest steroid dose in all of Australia.
They used to keep children in for two nights of observation following treatment for croup, but they let us go after just half an hour since we live nearby and can easily return to the hospital if necessary.
We took Vi in for treatment after a few difficult nights at home. Because of the low drug doses, Vi's quick improvement, and the excellent care we received, I wouldn't hesitate to take my children to the hospital much more quickly if croup hits our family again.
Vi perked up just half an hour after receiving a low-dose steroid
We packed salami, crackers, cheese and apple slices and ate and clapped through the programme from 7 to 9pm. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, except possibly Vi who is working hard to acquire new teeth. Ben wore Vi on his back in a mei tai and walked around with her quite a bit at the beginning and again towards the end of the performance.
Since we parked far away, I got the the chance to wear both the older children while walking to the concert. As the last encore finished, Nikki said, "I want to ride, Mama," and Michael echoed, "I do want ride too!" I put Nikki on my back in the Ergo and Michael on my front in an improvised knotted ring sling made from a custom-dyed purple Osnaburg wrap.
This was a fantastic free evening out, and as long as the kids don't take too long to recover from being up so late, we'll be back next year!
Vi surprised us this weekend by pushing herself up into a sitting up position on the playmat. She continued to sit up while snacking on Duplo and grabbing a book.
Note: the video doesn't have any sound. I decided it wasn't the time to stun the world with Nikki's and my rendition of We Gather Together.
